Political allegiances were on full display at the bustling courthouse steps in Manhattan, where former President Donald Trump faces charges related to hush money payments. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) took a stand, decrying the proceedings as “election interference” aimed at disrupting Trump’s campaign efforts.
Johnson, alongside Trump and other notable Republican figures, presented a united front on Tuesday. However, not all within the Republican ranks shared this sentiment.
Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, a vocal critic of Trump and his allies, took to X to express her disapproval of Johnson’s actions. In a sharp rebuke, she wrote: “Have to admit I’m surprised that @SpeakerJohnson wants to be in the ‘I cheated on my wife with a porn star’ club. I guess he’s not that concerned with teaching morality to our young people after all.”
The response to Cheney’s tweet was severe. Newsmax host Rob Schmitt fired back with a tweet ridiculing Cheney’s moral stance: “Lessons in Morality… from a Cheney lol.”
Even, Marc Thiessen, a liberal analyst, joined the fray:”He just risked his job and political career to pass aid to Ukraine and literally saved a country. You weren’t there to fight for Ukraine because you blew up your political career and now you heckle him from the sidelines.”
Cheney, a former member of House leadership and avid Trump hater, voted to impeach the former president following the Capitol breach on January 6, 2021.
“These are politically motivated trials and they are a disgrace,” House Speaker Johnson told reporters on Tuesday.
